Executive coaching and business coaching can be used in many situations. Much of the time it is thought of as a long, big commitment and depending what you would like to work on, it may be. However, there are times using a coach can be advantageous for shorter term results. Quick wins if you will.
Think of it this way, you may not necessarily want the coach but you do want the result.
A good analogy is needing to drill a hole. You need a drill bit to do that. You don’t necessarily want the drill bit. You want the hole and need the bit to get the hole.
While big transformations are important and bring big changes and big wins which are awesome, sometimes small incremental wins can be just as important. Small wins can bring momentum which will move you towards those bigger wins.
- Start or complete a project you have been putting off
A coach can help with those projects that have been sitting on your desk but you just haven’t started or have started but haven’t finished. How many of those smaller projects do you have either on your mind or on your to-do list?
How would you feel if even one of those were completed? Would it move your work forward? Your career? Your employees? How would your boss see you if it were completed? What would be completing this project free you to work on?
Now ask yourself, what is on that project list that is important but not critical? When will it become critical? How will you react when it reaches that point? Will you simply get the project completed or will it provide an incredible result?
- Solve a problem or reach a decision
A coach can help you work through a problem or a decision that you have. Perhaps you have a problem or a decision that you need to come to some conclusion on. You may be too close to the issue and you are going around and around on the issue. A coach will ask you probing questions and may help you look at it from an angle you hadn’t thought about previously. Having a detached, neutral person asking questions will bring up thoughts and ideas that you hadn’t considered in the past.
- Transformative Change
In this case a coach can help with big transformative changes. You will have a better understanding of how you relate to your business and employees and how they relate to you. You will identify strategies that will allow you to be your authentic you, which in turn will allow you to accomplish more and spend time on the important things. You will identify what is holding you back from incredible success and the steps you can take to break through those barriers and drive your business to level you had hoped and dreamed of.
As you can see, a coach can help in many ways. Coaches are there to support you and guide you so you can become the hero you want to be. What’s on your plate that you need or want to complete? What’s on your plate that your boss wants you to do?

This is great David! Sometimes a coach is great to get something that is stuck-unstuck. I like your incremental approach to coaching.
